The
new fishfinders and GPS tracking devices

Many
traditional anglers prefer not to use modern fishfinders, and still
like to locate fish using old fashioned methods. However, GPS tracking
devices have become quite popular in recent years on charter boats and
yachts that go far offshore. Fishfinders and GPS devices have merged
to create a huge leap forward in angling.
Fishfinders that use GPS tracking operate on the same principles as
any global positioning system receiver. There are twenty-seven
satellites orbiting the Earth that were first used by the United
States military. Now anyone with a receiver can employ these
satellites in order to find his or her exact placement on Earth. This
system utilizes trilateration to bounce radio waves off the satellites
and give you a precise location.
Modern fishfinders use sonar technology to send
ultrasonic sound waves through the water at the rate of 4800 feet per
second. When the sound waves hit objects such as fish, the waves
return more slowly. Using this sonar technology you can determine
where the fish are as they pass under your boat. GPS tracking devices
are now being integrated into the newer finders, making pinpointing
the schools that much more precise.
Modern fishfinders do not have to
send ultrasonic sound waves straight down in the water. Sidefinders
can search laterally for fish and the computer display does not show
any objects besides the fish the finder locates. It’s a big
technological leap forward, especially for commercial fishermen! You
can also purchase sidefinders that are programmed to ignore smaller
fish. By employing a sidefinder, as well as a GPS tracking receiver,
on your next fishing expedition, you will be sure to catch many fish.
