Peacock bass – facts &
fishing tips

Peacock bass are exotic game fish that
most fishing tips recommend angling for in South America. They’re also
found in some Florida lakes here in the U.S. Peacock bass are also
known as pavon, tucunare, and the butterfly peacock. It is one of the most fun and difficult
fish to catch, and the rewards of snagging one are myriad. The most
basic of fishing tips for this species is to use standard top water
lures and crankbaits, or fairly large live bait (minnows, shad, fat
worms). They’re gluttons and love to hunt for prey, so
it’s not unusual to catch several in a short span of time – if you’re
lucky enough to find them in the first place!
Peacock bass resemble a cross between
a largemouth and a grouper, and range in size from a few pounds up to
about 11 lbs. However, they are not bass at all. It’s actually a
member of the cichlids family. They have evolved over time to be
ferocious fighters and powerful aggressors because they inhabit
environments that they share with alligators, piranhas, and other
scary creatures. They are also beautiful to look at, being mottled
with bright orange, green, gold, and blue colorings. Fishing tips are
widely known, especially in South America, where they are very sought
after game fish.
Peacock bass are such popular quarry
because not only are they fighters with gorgeous colorings, but they
are found in some of the most beautiful lakes and rivers in exotic
South American countries, such as Venezuela, Chile, Brazil and Peru.
Fishing tips for all of them include enticing them with both
flyfishing and regular casting methods.
Peacock bass are territorial and love to defend their habitat, as
well as themselves. Many fishing tips recommend fishing for them with
a partner or two, because if one fisherman hooks this fish, then
chances are another one will follow suit, eager to have access to prey
as well. They can strike either above or under the water, so be sure
to vary your methods, if you ever get down that way to fish those
waters. Standard cast and retrieve methods you’d use for largemouth
bass are appropriate here as well.
