The myth of the giant catfish and the
true fish facts
Most anglers have some story or
another to tell about giant catfish. There are rumors of seven foot
beasts that could eat men alive. However, the facts tell a different
tale. Although it is true that there is such a thing as a giant
catfish, it is not nearly as big as the name entails. These creatures
can get quite large, but public records show
that their size is vastly exaggerated in most cases.
The biggest of the giant catfish in
North America are often found in the tailwaters of Pickwick Dam in
Tennessee. This proliferation is located at the conjunction of the
states of Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee. The American South has
always loved these big water catfish, and that’s where you will find the
facts exaggerated with regularity.
Anglers have caught giant
catfish that weigh more than forty pounds. That’s pretty big! These
catfish are often blue or flathead varieties found in the Mississippi
River. They are caught with live fish or heavy, sinking baits. Some
monsters have even been known to weigh over sixty pounds, and there
are pictures to prove it. So these super-size catfish are backed up by
verifiable fish facts. But giants that can eat a man whole? Naw.
Giant catfish can
be the closest thing that many Southern anglers get to a big-game
catch. If you cannot afford to rent a yacht and go out in the ocean to
hunt for blue marlin or shark, then you can definitely sink some bait
on the river bank and wait for that seven foot monster catfish to strike. Just
make sure you have a fellow fisherman along to rescue you from his
belly!
