How to pick fishing gear
When it comes to
choosing fishing gear, we anglers often put the cart before the
horse. We adapt our tackle to whatever kind of angling we happen to
be doing that day, as opposed to buying it based on the types of fish
we prefer. With so much specialized fishing gear out there – lures,
rods, reels, fish finders, even bass boats – it makes more sense to
buy supplies designed for our preferences in types of fish.
Make a plan for
fishing gear based on how you fish
If you already
have a full season’s worth of fishing gear, this advice probably won’t
matter. But if not, a few simple tips will help you get just the
right tackle and supplies for the types of fish you spend most of your
time catching.
First, list the
many fishing gear categories in separate columns on a piece of paper
or print it out from your computer: lures, rods, reels, fish finders,
etc. Then, pick the types of fish you regularly pursue:
bass, catfish, crappie, walleye, trout, etc.
Once you narrow
down the list to the most appropriate choices, head to the fishing
gear store and track down a friendly salesperson. Armed with this
plan, it becomes a simple matter of matching up angling items for each
of the types of fish you’ve chosen.
Your fishing gear
possibilities have exploded in recent years, with many more choices
than before. It’s easy, even for experienced anglers, to become
overwhelmed and confused. If you organize a list based on the types
of fish you most often go after, you’ll greatly reduce the tackle
buying anxiety.
