Reviews of two fly reels by Okuma and Daiwa

If you enjoy flyfishing, fly reels are very important pieces of fishing tackle.  Good choices abound, but two excellent reel companies – Okuma and Daiwa – make exceptional models.  Below, I’ve reviewed a couple of fly reels, one by Okuma, the other by Daiwa.  They are by no means the only choices for anglers, but their popularity points to their quality.

Most fly reels take serious abuse, which is why I really like the Okuma Airframe (pictured at left) and the Daiwa Lochmor (pictured below) series.  Both are rugged and easy to operate.  Many fishermen have used or are currently using them.

Saltwater uses for fly reels are increasing every year, it seems, as retiree populations increase in Florida and California.  This is why the Okuma Airframe is at the top of my list.  Unlike the Daiwa model, it’s constructed of lightweight black graphite (spool and frame) and stainless steel (shaft).  This reel is as corrosion-proof as they come!

fly reelsFreshwater fly reels are more common still, and Okuma does make a large line of them.  But my choice for best model is the Daiwa Lochmor series.  Its alloy frame and spool keep it lightweight, and it sports really terrific drag performance.  This reel also features quick conversion to right- or left-handed winding.

One of the most important things I look for in fly reels is ease of use and convenience.  Both the Okuma and Daiwa models above have quick-change spools that are reasonably priced.  This makes a lot of difference when many anglers today like to change lines often.
