Going catfishing?
Try these live bait tips to catch ‘em by the boatload
One of the
all-time most popular pastimes for American anglers is catfishing.
Part of the attraction is that catfish can be caught using a wide
variety of live bait, as well as concoctions you can dream up all on
your own. Serious catfishing enthusiasts use many different forms of
live bait, letting the fish determine what they’re hungry for on any
given day.
Here are some
catfishing tips when using live bait
The best
catfishing enticer I know of is cut live bait. Without a doubt, I’ve
personally caught more channels and blue cats this way than any other.
A good catfishing
tip is to take large live minnows or shad and cut them in half just
before you use them. Then quickly hook up both pieces of live bait and
drop down into a spot in the river or lake where you know some catfish
are scavenging.
While catfishing,
remember that they are notorious for virtually inhaling entire rigs –
hook, line, sinker, and live bait. A good tip is to use larger
fishhooks
than you might otherwise. This can sometimes prevent a swallowed rig.
Here’s a
catfishing tip you’ve probably never gotten before… they LOVE Gar
eggs. If you can find a spot near the bank where there’s a lot of
splashing and fishtails thrashing, that might be the best spot of all
to drop a line with live bait for catfish.
If you find such a
spot, a great catfishing strategy is to use a fairly large hook and
30-count shrimp for live bait. Flip it almost to the bank, and let
the line settle. Get ready to catch a catfish on every cast!
