Fishing Rod Stands

The fishing rod stand can be used to act as a prop for the rod while the angler works on the end tackle, and in many instances to give the angler a break from holding the rod. It can also act as a steady platform for the fishing rod while the angler observes the movement of the tip as a fish bites.

Several versions are available and the physics of holding the rod is the same, it's usually the material of the holder that changes.

The simplest rod stand is a small branch or twig of a tree with a vee at the end. Stick to branch in the ground in place the rod on the vee, place the rod in the vee and you have a very simple rod holder. However if you're not very attentive to the fishing rod you're likely to lose a fish in this way.

In regions devoid of foliage it's not a good to be breaking tree branches every time a new rod stand is needed.

The surf-fishing version of the above rod holder has to be sturdy and capable of holding a 12 foot beach casting rod. Two different styles are generally used. There is the short stubby style that you stick in the sand and place the butt of the rod handle into. Then there's the longer version, again you stick it in the sand, but the rod stand is about 4 feet long and holds the rod four feet higher off the sand.

The short stubby type of rod stand is cheaper and easier to carry. The longer rod stand is a lot more expensive, and more difficult to carry, but it has specific fishing advantages. When used in the surf, it keeps the fishing reel and the butt of the fishing rod high enough that a freak wave doesn't come in and cause damage to fishing equipment. You can also hang bait buckets, fishing tackle, and even a night light from some models.

Most importantly, the longer surf-fishing stand, extends the tip of the fishing rod so that the line is not resting on the water and in the waves. This way the line can be kept taut most of the time.

Of course the angler is better off holding the fishing rod to detect fish activity than using a bite detector. But the fishing rod stand comes in very handy when you need to change bait, or fishing tackle.
