Alaska Salmon
Fishing – Try Seward!

When it comes
to planning an Alaska salmon fishing trip, you’d be well advised to
include the town of Seward, Alaska on your itinerary. Located about
120 miles south of Anchorage, Seward is nicely positioned for easy
access from the lower 48 states. More importantly, it’s home to some
of the best salmon fishing action you’ll ever experience!
Because Seward
is located on the Southern coast of Alaska, you can enjoy fishing for
salmon there virtually year-round. The weather can be tricky, but it
tends to be much more comfortable for longer periods of time than
you’ll find with fishing trips to the interior or Northern parts of
Alaska.
Why Seward is
‘King’ for Salmon Fishing
Then
there’s the salmon! The entire Kenai Peninsula of Alaska (of which
Seward is one of the main towns) is world-famous for it’s salmon and
halibut deep-sea fishing. Half-day and full-day charters leave daily
from the small boat harbor in Seward. Generally, the salmon charters
will provide you with all the fishing gear you need, but you must
obtain a fishing license before departing shore.
Plan ahead to
avoid disappointment when working out your Alaska fishing vacation.
Hot spots like Seward require advance reservations, especially during
the peak salmon fishing months of July and August. If you go
off-season, you can probably sneak in somewhere in that part of Alaska
without scheduling it more than a month or so in advance. Just be
sure to pack lots of heavy clothing that’s suitable for fishing!
From April to
the middle of June, the prize fish to seek is the mighty Alaska King
Salmon! While you’re not likely to beat the record (100 lbs.), it’s
not unusual to haul in salmon topping the scales at 40-60 lbs. And
they fight like they mean it, so be prepared for a whale of a fishing
workout!
If you want a
real treat in Seward, take your fishing trip during the famous ‘Silver
Salmon Fishing Derby!’ Usually held in early August, this Alaska
attraction features thousands of dollars in prize money and a real
party atmosphere. But lodging goes quickly every year, so definitely
plan this fishing trip out well in advance.
