Try your hand at
fly fishing for trout or salmon
If you’ve never tried fly fishing to catch trout, salmon, or other
types of fish, you don’t know what you’re missing! Most freshwater
anglers who like going after bass, crappie, and catfish would really
get a kick out of fly fishing. It’s not just for trout and salmon, of
course, but I recommend those two species for the most enjoyment.
Fly fishing for trout and salmon is very
addicting
First, let me be as clear as I can about fly fishing. It ain’t
cheap! It requires a completely different set of tackle to catch
trout or salmon this way vs. typical freshwater angling.
You’ll need a fly fishing rod and reel set, of course. You can find
good deals at some sporting goods stores, but typically you can expect
to pay more than with other kinds of angling. Trust me – it’s worth
it, as you’ll discover the first time you fight a rainbow trout or
spawning salmon.
Fly fishing lures are an art form, as you’ve probably heard before.
You can find them in regular tackle shops, but if you get hooked (pun
intended) on catching trout or salmon, you’ll want to tie your own or
buy specialty flies. This gets expensive!
Why is fly fishing so much fun? Simple: trout and salmon, the two
most popular fish to catch using this method, are fighters. Big
time!
Beyond that, fly fishing is also a mindset. It teaches patience (oh
boy, does it!), because trout and salmon are often very picky about
which lures they’ll hit. It also forces you to focus and be quiet.
I’m talking about that inner kind of silence that’s hard to come by
elsewhere.
Overall, fly fishing is truly wonderful. If you get a chance and have
the means, just try it. When that first trout or salmon strikes, I
promise you’ll understand why so many anglers become life-long
enthusiasts.
